GrantVetted

Methodology

How we verify every grant

A grant is listed only after we have checked it against the funder's own page. This page explains what we check, what the Verified date means, and what we keep as a record of each check.

The verification process

Every listing goes through these steps before it reaches the digest, and again every week.

  1. DiscoveryWeekly

We read Grants.gov, RHIhub (the Rural Health Information Hub) and a short list of funders' own program pages for grants for rural health organisations and volunteer fire and EMS departments.

  2. FitPer listing

We keep a grant only when its own description fits the digest, and we show the line from that description that says why.

  3. Source checkPer listing

We fetch the funder's own page. It must be on the funder's own website (a government site, or a funder we have named), over https, with every redirect staying on that site, and the page must name the grant by its title or its opportunity number. For a Grants.gov listing we read the official Grants.gov record. A listing that fails any of these is left out.

  4. Record of the checkPer listing

We record when we checked and a fingerprint of exactly what the page said: a sha256 hash of the page as we read it. If the page changes, its fingerprint changes.

  5. PublicationWeekly

Listings go out in the weekly digest with their "Verified" date and a link to the funder's page. Every week each one is checked again: a listing is removed when its page is gone or no longer names the grant, or when its deadline has passed.

What the Verified date and the fingerprint tell you

The Verified date is the day we last checked the listing against the funder's own page. With each check we keep a fingerprint: a sha256 hash of the page exactly as we read it. It is our record of what the page said that day, and it lets us tell when the funder changes the page. To check a listing yourself, follow its link and read the funder's page.

Where a listing shows a deadline, it comes from the funder's page or from the RHIhub listing that led us to it. We do not check amounts or eligibility rules: read those on the funder's page before you apply.

Common questions

Do I need to understand the fingerprint to use GrantVetted?

No. The Verified date on each listing tells you when we checked it against the funder's page. The fingerprint is our own record of what that page said.

What happens if a grant is removed by the funder?

Every week we check every listing against the funder's page again. If the page is gone or no longer names the grant, or the deadline has passed, we remove the listing from the digest.

Can I check a listing myself?

Yes: every listing links to the funder's own page, so you can read the posting yourself. The fingerprint is a hash of the page as we read it on the Verified date; the page may have changed since, which is why we check again every week.

How often are listings re-verified?

Every listing is checked again each week, before the digest goes out.

What we hold for a listing

Only what its source gives us: the title, the funder, the next deadline when its source states one, the date we verified it, the fingerprint of the funder's page (shown here by its first and last characters), and the link to that page.
